Supporting Someone You Care About

Gentle, practical ways to support a friend or family member without pressure or judgment.

Listen more than you speak. Let the person share at their own pace, and believe what they tell you.

Avoid saying “just leave.” Leaving can involve real barriers — safety risks, children, housing, money, immigration status, or emotional ties. Respect their choices, even when they are hard to watch.

Remind them it is not their fault, and that they deserve to feel safe.

Offer specific help: a ride, a place to charge a phone, keeping a bag or documents, or sitting with them while they contact an advocate.

Take care of yourself too. Supporting someone can be heavy, and trained advocates can support you as a helper.
