Digital Safety Basics

Considerations for using phones, computers, and accounts more safely when someone may be monitoring you.

If you think someone may be monitoring your devices, consider using a device they cannot access, such as a trusted friend’s phone or a public library computer.

Private or incognito browsing does not save history on that device, but it does not hide activity from monitoring software, an employer network, or someone who sees your screen.

The Quick Exit button on this site takes you to a neutral page. It does not erase your browsing history or prevent device monitoring.

Downloaded files, such as PDFs, may remain visible on your device in a downloads folder.

Location sharing, shared cloud accounts, and connected devices can reveal more than expected. An advocate can help you think through which changes are safe to make — sudden changes can sometimes raise risk.
